Trauma assessment and treatment

Ages 3 to 18 and their families.

The Halton Trauma Centre contracts with a number of therapists who work collaboratively as a team with families where a child or adolescent member(s) has been identified or has disclosed interpersonal abuse. Trauma Assessments determine the effects of interpersonal abuse on the child/adolescent and the most effective treatment approach. Following the completion of the Trauma Assessment, the client may enter into a combination of individual and family therapy specific to their assessment recommendations.

Funding requirements: Approximately $1500 per family.

Sexualized behaviour problems in children

Ages 3 to 12 and their families.

There have been an alarming number of requests from the community for assessment and treatment of children, under the age of 12, who demonstrate developmentally inappropriate or aggressive sexual behaviours. Recognizing these children and understanding the causes, impact, and treatment of the sexual behaviour problems is a relatively new area of research and clinical practice. We are also experiencing a dramatic increase in the number of children who are victims of interpersonal abuse who also display inappropriate sexual behaviour.

Funding requirements: Approximately $2500 per family.

Risk assessments and treatment for sexually offending youth

Ages 12 to 18 and their families.

A program for adolescents between the ages of 12 and 18 years of age will provide an understanding of the circumstances leading to the sexual offending behaviour, risks, strengths and treatment needs. Undoubtedly, adolescents and children who have sexually offended and their families, present broad and unique challenges to communities. Routinely, this diverse group requires assessment and treatment interventions that go far beyond their sexual offending behaviours.

Funding requirements: Approximately $3000 per family.

Sibling abuse assessment and treatment

Ages 3 to 18 and their families.

A program for families where sibling on sibling abuse has occurred. This program would include a Trauma Assessment for the victimized child [no fee], a Risk Assessment for the offending child/adolescent and a comprehensive Family Assessment. For many decades, mental health practitioners have been aware of the pervasive problem of child abuse. However, mental health professionals are only now beginning to become aware of other types of abuse within the family. One such type of abuse that is receiving increased attention is sibling abuse. Sibling abuse refers to emotional, physical, and sexual violence within the sibling dyad. It is ironic that this type of abuse has received little attention, given that it is now becoming increasingly recognized as the most common form of family domestic violence.

Funding requirements: Approximately $3000 per family.
