Sibling incest assessment and treatment

Assessment

  • Intended for families in which sibling-on-sibling sexual abuse has occurred.

  • The purpose of the assessment is to come to an understanding of the environment in which the abuse occurred, and to identify treatment recommendations for the entire family.

  • Examples of some of the issues that may arise during this type of assessment include:

    • Family rules regarding privacy and nudity.

    • The accessibility of pornographic or sexually explicit materials in the home.

    • The ability of the parents to provide a safe environment through appropriate supervision.

    • The parents' understanding of the impact of the incestuous activity on both children.

    • The commitment of the parents to actively participate in the assessment and treatment process.

Eligibility criteria

Please note exclusionary criteria.

Victim:

  • Must live in the Halton Region.

  • Must have made a clear disclosure of physical, emotional, or sexual abuse (i.e., can identify the event and the perpetrator).

  • Must have identified physical, emotional, or sexual abuse as the primary presenting problem, and the child/adolescent has agreed to receive an assessment.

  • All disclosures of sexualized or sexually offending behavior towards any identifiable individuals must have first been investigated by either the CAS or police.

Offender:

  • Must live in the Halton Region.

  • There must be an identified concern about the adolescents's sexual behavior; child possesses sexual knowledge or demonstrates sexual behaviors that are not typical for his or her age or has a preoccupation with sexual activities and cannot be redirected (eg. compulsively masturbates; employs language and/or jokes that are heavily sexualized; cannot play games that do not have a sexualized component to them; has coerced, manipulated, or physically or verbally threatened others into sexual involvement).

  • Must have committed a sexual offence for which they have been charged, or could have been charged under the Criminal Code of Canada.

  • Must consent to participate in an assessment.

Treatment focus

  • In cases of sibling incest, an assessment of the entire family, as well as individual assessments of the affected siblings occurs.

  • In the beginning family sessions will not include both siblings who were involved in the incestuous activity. Instead, the inclusion of both siblings will only occur when both children are ready and willing.

  • Reuniting the offending sibling with the family can be a goal of treatment, if the family wishes. However, this is a decision that is left up to the family, and our primary concern is to help the family work through such issues and choices.
